Let me start off by saying that every other week we have a lady that comes and does the deep cleaning around our house (Moping, dusting, etc). She's been doing it for years and she's a wonderful lady! Well today when I was pulling into the drive way my exchange student told me I needed to pull forward a little bit more than usual because she needed to get out. Understandable. However after that he says "You know because she's probably not that good of a driver." Now I have no idea where this is coming from, maybe the fact that she drives an SUV? Nope, when I ask him why he says "Because she's a woman." Now if there's three things I can't stand they're Racists, Homophobes, and Sexists. However I have to live with this jackass so I just sigh, shake my head in disappointment , and vent about it on a car forum.

Where from?
I had 2 exchange students when I was little. One from S. America and one from Scandinavia. Never met 2 more different people in my life.

Well, that's sort of the idea behind exchanges though, right? Talking like that is probably just fine form where he comes from. Showing him that that shit isn't cool and why is very much why he's there.
Just like when we get sent over to France and shown why most of our cheese and wine isn't OK.

Where is the exchange student from? I'm sure you're well aware of this, but some cultures are ok with harsh generalizations such as that one- especially towards women. I absolutely understand your position, and I'm not defending what he said, but it could be a possibility that he didn't really see anything wrong with saying that. Maybe while he's here in America, tell him that it's generally considered rude to say things like that; after all, I assume he's here to learn about our culture. Make him think that America is better than making those kind of statements, although, the unfortunate truth is that I'm not sure majority of America is on the same page as you and I.

Playing devil's advocate for just a moment...
It's also possible that he's from a society where women don't drive (or, more honestly, can't — thanks to the society there). It could be that he'd never even considered the possibility that women can drive, since he'd never seen it before coming here.
But yeah, discrimination (including discriminatory derogatory speech) is rotten. It'll be nice when the whole world is nice and kind to everyone. (ha! I can dream, right?)

Might have been a good teaching moment. "Hey, we don't think that way in this country. Well, some people do, but we don't." Part of being an exchange student is learning other cultures, and learning to be a gracious guest. Whenever I travel abroad, my guiding principal is, "Don't be an asshole in somebody else's country."

Am Asian, can confirm. Although I'm not racist.
Some of it is understandable, although still not appropriate. My mom is racist towards Japanese people because of what the Japanese soldiers did to the Chinese during WWII, but she acts as if anyone who is Japanese had everything to do with it. I keep telling her she's blaming the wrong people, but she doesn't care. It's terrible.

I truly hate Racists, Homophobes, and Sexists.
But I also hate people with out any humor, who use violent language like "slap the shit out of ..." because of a stupid joke! Thats whats called a bigot!
